Introduction There are many reasons why CANDU nuclear generating stations have consistently been placed at or near the top of the list of the world's best performing nuclear generating stations. This brochure examines one reason for CANDU's success: its unique design, a reactor design that has put Canada ahead of all the countries of the western world when the achievements of all thermal reactors are considered. Some of the design features characteristic of the CANDU reactor are: • a reactor core comprising small diameter fuel channels rather than one huge pressure vessel • separate heavy water moderator and cooling systems • on-power refuelling • reactivity devices that are not subjected to high temperatures or pressures • natural uranium fuel • reduced consequences from accidental reactivity fluctuations - excess reactivity available from the fuel is small and the relatively long lifetime of prompt neutrons in the reactor precludes rapid changes in power levels
