Introduction LORENZO M. TANADA: A TRIBUTE TO A COLOSSAL NATIONALIST LEADER by Prof. Roland G. Simbulan National Chairperson Nuclear-Free Philippines Coalition Senator Lorenzo M. Tanada, who will have celebrated his 94th birthday this year passed away last May 28, 1992. We regard the former Senator Lorenzo M. Tanada, or "Ka Tanny", as a colossal nationalist leader and statesman who excellently dedicated his whole life and brilliance in the service of the Filipino nation. From 1981 to 1983, Ka Tanny served as founding Chairman of the Nuclear-Free Philippines Coalition (NFPC) and thereafter served as its Chairman Emeritus until his demise. Perhaps, it is no coincidence that his passing away is on the same year as the founding centennial of the Katipunan, the revolutionary movement of the Filipino people that led to that turning point in our history, the day the Filipino people launched a nationwide and eventually victorious struggle to end more than three centuries of Spanish colonial subjugation, the first national revolution against Western colonialism in Asia. The Nuclear-Free Philippines Coalition (NFPC) and the International Affairs Program of the National Council of Churches (NCCP-IAP) is very proud to reprint Senator Lorenzo Tanada's speech, "The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant: A Monument to Man's Folly ... "which we first printed in 1983, as a way of paying tribute to the life and cause of this great nationalist leader.
