1997 no nukes asia forum introduction & backround THE NUCLEAR FREE PHILIPPINES COALITION will host the 5th No Nukes Asia Forum on September 2-5, 1997 at the university of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, Phils. The Forum will be preceded by a sustainable Energy conference with Asian NGOs on September 1, 1997 sponsored by the SOUTHEAST ASIA ENERGY CAMPAIGN OF GREENPEACE INTERNATIONAL in cooperation with NFPC. The Forum will bring together non-governmental organizations and grassroots representatives from at least nine countries in Asia that are currently the recipients of aggressive and systematic marketing campaign by nuclear industries and agencies advocating for the adoption of the nuclear option for countries in Asia for its energy requirements. Four years ago, the Nuclear Free Philippines coalition was part of the core group of national organizations from the different Asian countries who first held their meeting in Tokyo, Japan eventually united on the basis of their common aspiration to block all attempts by the nuclear industries to nuclearize Asia, and forge a common front to intensify their information and educational campaign in the region. The previous No Nukes Asia Forum meetings have become effective venues to strengthen the host country's capacity to mount an effective anti-nuke campaign. It is hoped that the 1997 No Nukes Asia Forum will be able to highlight the Philippine anti-nukes campaign and contribute towards a stronger pressure group against governments and the marketing blitz of nuclear industries in Asia. The NNAF has become an effective network of anti-nuke activists confronting the issues of nuclear accidents, nuclear wastes storage and transboundary shipments, radiation and its impact on health and environment.
