ABSTRACT

A follow-up study has been carried out of the health of men who participated in the
UK atmospheric nuclear weapon tests and experimental programmes that were carried
out in Australia and the Pacific between 1952 and 1967. The names of participants
were identified from archives of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and a matched
control group was selected from the same archives. The study groups defined totalled
22,347 participants and 22,326 controls, of which 99.6% were traced to 1 January
1984 and the rates of mortality and cancer incidence (as determined from death
certificates and national records of cancer registration) were compared in the two
groups. The numbers of deaths observed were also compared with those that would
have occurred if the men had experienced the death rates recorded for all men of the
same ages over the same years in England and Wales.

No comprehensive list of participants had been compiled at the time and it could
not be assumed that all participants had been identified. Names of participants and
identifying details were, therefore, also sought from many other sources. Reports
were received of 2161 individuals who were apparently eligible for inclusion and
who were adequately identified, and these 'independent respondents' were followed
as a separate group. Of these, 1707 had been included in the main study group,
414 were accepted as participants but had not been included, and 7 could not be
traced in MOD records.
