BACKGROUND 50 YEARS BACKGROUND BRIEF "All of us were living when the Government used the country for the bomb." The Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta - Senior Aboriginal Women of Coober Pedy - are all survivors of the atomic testing program and have been campaigning against the waste dump proposal for the past six years. "We've already lost a lot through the bomb ... No more. Irati Wanti! The poison, leave it. No radioactive waste dump in our ngura in our country. It's strictly poison and we don't want it!" Between 1953 and 1963 the British Government, supported by the Australian Government, conducted twelve full-scale nuclear weapons tests and a series of 'minor trials' in the South Australian desert. Despite unsuitable meteorological conditions, a full-scale atomic bomb codenamed 'Totem 1' was detonated on October 15th 1953 at Emu Junction, a clay pan 280 kilometres northwest of Coober Pedy. 'Totem 1' sent a dense radioactive cloud; the Black Mist, far beyond the testing range across northwest South Australia. The nuclear fallout "spread right through" causing immediate and long-term sickness and death amongst Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities. • 'Totem 1' was ten kilotons Hiroshima was l5kt. [One kiloton equals the explosive power of 1,000 tons of TNT] • The 'Totem 1' fallout was still clearly visible twenty-four hours after detonation. • Anangu communities received no forewarning of the tests, and warning signs on site were only displayed in English Fifty years after 'Totem 1', which is responsible for a massive increase in radiation- related illnesses and genetic birth defects, the Federal Government is planning to build a national nuclear waste dump in far-north SA. The Kungka Tjuta are generously offering the Australian community an opportunity to learn from the pain and loss of the past, to prevent the same Irati poison, from disturbing the future.
