1. INTRODUCTION

This report is the nineteenth in the Agency's series of annual reports on operating 
experience with nuclear power stations in Member States.
The report is a direct output from the Agency's Power Reactor Information System 
(PRIS) whose data bank contains all the operating experience data published in the 
Agency's operating experience annual reports since 1971 and the basic information 
on power reactors, including design data.
The definitions of parameters and the data presentation formats of the report have 
been considerably modified in order to increase its usefulness. The modifications 
are based on the recommendations of a Senior Advisory Group Meeting convened 
by the Agency in February 1985.
In previous years, load factor and operation factor were used as basic performance 
indicators. However, load cycling and load following operation are being increasingly 
used in some countries and it has become necessary to use energy-based availability 
factors as performance indicators. The data acquisition format has been modified to 
carry energy-based data, which have permitted effecting energy-based availability 
analysis and presenting energy-based information on plant performance and outages.
Besides this modification, the outage classification and outage cause description 
systems have been changed so as to obtain absolute conformity with UNIPEDE and 
the Commission of the European Communities. All the outage information stored 
in PRIS since 1971 has been reclassified according to the new outage classification 
system, which has permitted presenting a historical summary of outages in the new 
system.
