EDITORIAL NOTE

THIS second issue of Science News is entirely devoted to the subject of Atomic 
Energy, which is indeed science news in its most spectacular form. For this one 
issue we have intentionally broken our policy of producing a miscellany ranging 
the whole of Science, because of the serious problems, political, military and moral, 
as well as scientific raised by the invention of the atomic bomb. The chances of 
survival of civilised life as we know it now may well depend on finding a way to 
ensure that this new force will never again be used for destructive purposes and 
scientists as well as others are deeply concerned with thoughts and hopes about 
these problems.
This collection of articles does not attempt to enter into this whole wide field, but 
covers only the technical and scientific questions. We have tried to tell the story of 
atomic energy in a form that will be interesting and understandable to the general 
reader who is not a specialist. It is a complex story of a long technical development 
and, while we have aimed at telling it in a way that requires little previous 
knowledge, we could not hope to make it easy reading or suitable for the reader 
who wants to skim through the book without effort or thought.
All the articles have been written by scientists who were working at Los Alamos 
at the time when the plans for the book were made. It was felt that, by choosing 
authors who could work closely together, we would have the best chance of getting 
the story told fairly uniformly, while each article could still be written by someone 
with special knowledge on that particular aspect of the subject.
