Mechanical testing on irradiated materials. A short impression The determination of mechanical properties of irradiated materials has been a subject of interest at the ECN ever since its foundation in 1958. Through the years an extensive testing program has been set up with emphasis on mechanical properties measurements of irradiated alloyed structural steels at elevated temperatures. The data are used in the design and safety analysis of primary reactor components such as vessels and grid plate. In addition data for other applications such as first wall materials in fusion technology have been generated. The ECN Mechanical Testing Laboratory carries out research programs for national and foreign industries as well as other interested organizations. Mostly structural materials such as the ferritic and austenitic stainless steels are investigated, but also aluminium, vanadium base alloys and graphite are included in the research and development programs. During the last decade microprocessor-based data acquisition and control systems have been introduced in the laboratory. These investments are intended to support all phases of the experimental work and have increased the capabilities of the testing machines and experimental analysis. As a consequence a reduction in man-hours per test, improved accuracy and ability to run long lasting or complex tests are achieved.
