Uit de publicatie:
Radiation is a natural part of life. It has existed since the beginning of time and is an integral part of the universe in which we live. In fact, life as we know it on earth has evolved in the presence of radiation and we cannot live without it. There are many different kinds of radiation which, although beneficial, can have harmful effects under some circumstances. For example heat radiation provides warmth but can cause burns, ultraviolet radiation provides a tan but can cause skin burns, and visible light radiation is needed to see things but a sudden flash can cause blindness. We recognize the risks involved in the use of this radiation but we need it, we are used to it, we feel comfortable with it, and we accept it. However, there is another kind of radiation that is extremely important to us. It is called ionizing radiation and it is the subject of this booklet. Ionizing radiation has always come to us from the sun and outer space and from naturally occurring radioactive elements in the earth. Our bodies contain naturally occurring radioactive material and so does the food we eat and the air we breathe.
