Radiation-a fact of life

We have always been subjected to natural radiation. We are exposed to radiation 
from the sun and outer space; naturally occurring radioactive materials are present 
in the earth, the houses we live in and the buildings where we work, and the food 
and drink we consume. There are radioactive aerosols and gases in the air we 
breathe; and even our own bodies contain naturally occurring radioactive elements. 
The level of this inescapable natural "background" radiation exposure varies 
greatly from place to place.
We are also exposed to sources of radiation that we ourselves create. X-rays and 
ther kinds of radiation used for medical purposes, fall-out from nuclear explosives 
testing and the small quantities of radioactive materials which are allowed to escape 
to the environment in the course of normal operation of nuclear installations are 
some examples.
