The objective of this article is to provide some information that hopefully will aidthe reader in grasping the significance of risks associated with low level human exposure to ionizing radiation such that he may better judge whether or not nuclear power can be an acceptable source of energy. Perhaps it is axiomatic that with the rapid depletion of natural oil and with the increasing world population the world supply of energy must be increased or we face a future of a depreciating standard of living and mass starvation. It is assumed here that we must increase this supply of energy; however, it is recognized a priori that there are related questions which are more basic and must be considered but are not addressed here. It must be recognized also that any and all energy choices not only offer man a better way of life but also exact of him a price of environmental pollution, sickness and death. Most persons agree that renewable sources of energy such as geotherm and solar are preferable to expendable sources like oil, coal and nuclear, but the simple fact is that only coal and nuclear are viable choices for meeting the energy demand to the middle of the coming century. We must put far more effort into the rapid development and application of renewable energy sources, but within the lifetime of our grandchildren coal and nuclear must bear the brunt as our major sources of energy. Also, there are many in the nuclear energy field who will claim--and I believe justifiably so--that nuclear energy should be listed as a renewable source.
