PREFACE

The work presented in this paper was carried out in the framework of the METRO
project. The METRO project forms part of the Dutch research programme into the
retrievable disposal of radioactive waste and is being carried out at the Netherlands
Energy Research Foundation. The METRO project is jointly financed by the Dutch
Ministry for Economic Affairs and the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation.

ABSTRACT

A new design for a repository for high level radioactive wastes in rock salt has
been developed at the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation. This design and the
work being done to evaluate this design is presented in this paper. It is emphasised
that this evaluation is not yet completed and that the design is still a draft and
is subject to discussion within the Dutch waste management research programme.
