FUNDAMENTAL NOTES ON NUCLEAR MATERIAL BOOK ACCOUNTING

1. INTRODUCTION

Quoting from an inaugural speech (1) 'The question of accountability and
management of fissile material has become more and more important not only
from the international point of view, but also from the point of view of the general
management of the plant as seen from the efficiency of operation'. So, some kind
of book-ke ping can always be expected from the plant operators. Operators
generate lot of numbers for their own purpose of management. Numbers pertaining
to material accounting are normally available within these numbers, but at the same
time to pick numbers which are directly related and to relate the numbers themselves
for efficient material accounting may be a difficult task. Lot of scattered information
is available on material accounting in different forms pertaining to the context of the
literature. Present notes are an attempt to bring out the minimum requirements of
material accounting. It is to be noted, that notes do not deal. with methodology and
the author realises the importance of this aspect and will be discussed in other
reports.
