Radiation exposure of a hospital employee beyond the statuary annual dose limit

The evaluation of the OSL (Optically Stimulated Luminescence) whole-body dosimeter of a hospital employee showed a reading of 24.2 mSv. This exceeds the German statuary annual dose limit for the whole-body dose of exposed radiation personnel of 20 mSv. The person concerned showed no deterministic effects. The dosimeter was worn by the employee for one calendar month before reading. Neither the radiation protection supervisor nor the person concerned could explain a possible exposure scenario. The hospital and the employee stated that necessary radiation protection measures have always been applied. The evaluation of the dosimeter readings of preceding 12 months showed no recorded exposure. The competent authority instructed the hospital that the whole-body dose of the concerned employee accumulated within 5 years (including the dose of 24.2 mSv) must not exceed 100 mSv.
