Unshielded Cs-137 source found in metal scrap

On 19 September 2000, 15:23, the radiation detector at the entrance of JEWOMETAAL Stainless Processing b.v., at Botlek Rotterdam gave a high level radiation alarm when a container passed the detector. The container (AWSU494301-2) was loaded with stainless steel metal scrap in Egypt. One unshielded Cs-137 source was recovered during carefully unloading. The Cs-137 with an estimated activity of 1 GBq has been taken to a safe storage. The Cs-137 source is attached at one end of a stainless steel rod (length 15 cm, diameter 2 cm, approx.). At the other end of the rod is a flange with a diameter of approx. 4 cm.
The rest of the load of metal scrap proved to the free of radioactivity.
