INES 2

Generic anomaly on some power supply boxes of the French pressurised water reactors

The French nuclear safety Authority (ASN) has rated at INES level 2 an anomaly likely to affect some power supply boxes, in any of EDF PWRs. This anomaly was initially discovered during checks being made on Penly unit 2.
Defects in power cable insulation were found in several power supply boxes located within the reactor building. They could prevent the operation of certain equipment (motors, valves) in some accidental conditions with presence of water or steam within the reactor building.
These defects stem from wire stripping operations with a view to connect them during initial mounting or subsequent modifications. Additional investigations highlighted similar defects on other French reactors. After detailed investigation EDF proposed to up-rate this event to INES level 2, which was reported to ASN on 9 March 2004.
EDF has submitted to ASN a programme for checking and repairing of affected boxes on all PWRs, which is currently being reviewed by ASN.
