FOREWORD The development of the helium cooled graphite moderated High Temperature Reactor (HTR) is taking place for more than thirty years now. Safety studies have indicated that an HTR with spherical fuel elements has very favourable safety characteristics: the loss of coolant as well as graphite fires will not result in any significant fuel damage. Because of the relatively high temperatures of the system, the HTR would be very suitable as a heat source for combined generation of heat and power (CHP). The combination of an HTR with a gas turbine offers all features of a modem energy technology: safe, clean and efficient. The technical and economical feasibilities of an Inherently safe Nuclear COGENeration (INCOGEN) installation are evaluated by nuclear energy related utilities, industry, research and engineering organizations. The study is supported by the PINK-2 programme of Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs with the objective to intensify nuclear competence.
